The SD1200IS is the perfect "transition" camera for a novice shooter who's ready to go beyond just shooting pictures in automatic mode. That being said, the SD1200IS features a Smart Auto mode which turns out very good images, especially outside.
Colors looked rich and precise. I was also quite impressed with the exposure and exposure, although details were a little lacking. But that's to be expected in auto mode.
The menu with the SD1200IS is well thought out, and relatively easy to follow. However, it took me a bit of time to figure out the shooting modes.
Simply press Func Set displays, and five shooting modes line up along the bottom of the screen. That part was pretty simple, it took me a little longer to figure out how to access the rest. You have got to highlight the last shooting mode to see "DISP" pop up next to the mode name, showing you that you need to press that button to see the others.
The PowerShot SD1200IS features 18 shooting modes. Some are really excellent for shooting outdoor activities. The SD1200IS features a unique Aquarium setting, which allows you to take pictures of fish etc. in your aquarium and eliminates the irritating glass glare that you usually get when you take these shots.
In very unofficial trials of a cousin's 30-gallon aquarium, this setting really worked like a charm. The Underwater mode with the SD1200IS is awesome as well, (just remember to use it with the proper waterproof casing, naturally!), also Fireworks, Foliage, and Beach modes, and the list goes on and on.
Taking pictures using manual mode provides you with more control. With it, you can adjust ISO, light metering, focus, white balance, and color effects. Don't go too high with the ISO, because in my unofficial tests, I discovered that my pictures started getting grainy and lost detail, as the ISO increased
The SD1200ISfeatures an assortment of white-balance settings (Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, and Fluorescent, and several more). I was extremely impressed with the quality of my shots using these settings. I especially liked the Fluorescent mode.
Taking pictures with fluorescent lighting can end up in overexposure and loss of details, but the Fluorescent mode eliminated this problem.
As I mentioned earlier, the Canon SD1200IS is a fantastic camera for novices who want to graduate to more sophisticated shooting. Even more experienced photographers will be impressed by the quality of the pictures.
As for price, I got mine at Amazon because they had the lowest price at the time. Check for yourself, as Amazon prices seem to go down all the time.
